Social Events

Meet new people and have fun on campus!

While academics are the main reason for attending WVU, social events within the Greek Community offer fraternity members a relaxing break from the daily routine of classes and work, as well as opportunities that are not found in other student organizations.

On a campus as large as WVU, you can sometimes feel like you need a family to turn to. Your fraternity can provide those close friendships and the peer support you need to be successful. The activities provided by fraternities provide an opportunity to form lasting friendships and meet new people. Although these activities are not required to participate in a Greek organization, there is little comparison to the variety, scope, and just plain fun of Greek social events.

Throughout the year fraternities will participate in many social events such as homecoming/family weekend, socials with sororities and other fraternities, greek week, alumni events, barbecues, spring formals, and awards banquets. These events offer good times and great opportunities to meet and interact with other members of the WVU community.

Below is a list of common social events fraternities hold each year:

Greek Week, Homecoming Week and Mountaineer Week - These weeks are packed full of events for the fraternities on campus. Many fraternity chapters work with the sororities on campus putting in countless hours to build floats for the Homecoming Parade, participate in friendly, fun competitions and have social gatherings with one another.

Formals - These events are typically held each year (and sometimes each semester) and are the most ceremonial of all fraternity social events. Members are usually expected to bring a date to Formals and dress in a dignified manner. Often, formals are held at posh resorts outside of Morgantown and are overnight events.

Date Parties - These are closed events with only members of the fraternity and their invited dates in attendance. Often, private spaces in a local club is rented. Fraternities hold these events periodically throughout the school year.

Alumni Events - All chapters hold social events with their alumni. These events build connections between undergraduate and graduate members and are often held outside of Morgantown. Popular alumni events are golf tournaments, pig roasts, and tailgates for away football games.

Road Trips - Many chapters take their membership on the road to visit another chapter of their fraternity at another school. Popular schools to visit are Indiana Univ. of PA, U of Pittsburgh, Univ. North Carolina, Univ. of Maryland, Ohio State University and Ohio University.

Athletic Events - Definition really not needed. Tailgates and other social events that involve geared toward the support for Mountaineer sports are incredible events you'll never forget from your time in college.

Brotherhood Dinners - Many chapters hold these dinners once a week, often on Sunday evening as a way to get active members, local alumi and associate members together for a great meal at the chapter house. This is a great time catch up with friends and meet some new people.
