Summary/History

Sigma Nu was founded January 1, 1869. It was founded by three cadets from Virginia Military Institute. These cadets; James Frank Hopkins, James McIlvaine Riley, and Greenfield Quarles formed Sigma Nu after witnessing a hazing ritual, which they were displeased to see. These men founded Sigma Nu on the principles of Love, Truth, and Honor and made the pledge to be a completely non-hazing fraternity. Sigma Nu still uses some military terms today for certain positions in each chapter and continues to stress that every chapter has a strict no-hazing policy.

Sigma Nu is the first “honor” fraternity, with our vision statement being "Excelling with Honor.”   Because this fraternity was founded at a military institution, the men involved had a high level of integrity that we continue to emulate today. Brotherhood is something that will easily be found in Sigma Nu. The friendships and memories formed will last a lifetime. Sigma Nu is not just four years, it’s for life.

The colony at WVU currently has 55 members as of May 2011. Many members of Sigma Nu are engineering, business, criminology, and pharmacy majors along with few guys that are former military. We also have members of student government in our fraternity. Sigma Nu has an excellent group of men and we are looking forward to finding more high-quality individuals to join us in the fall. We will be in a shared house program with Kappa Alpha at their mansion on 670 North High Street for the entire 2011-2012 school year.

Programs

Sigma Nu has recently re-founded the Gamma Pi chapter here at WVU during the 2011 spring semester. We are currently a colony as we must work towards becoming a full chapter again in the spring of 2012. We have an elected executive board and officers that are qualified and eager to continue to strengthen this fraternity.

In 1945, Brother William P. Yates inspired the formation of the "Sigma Nu Inc., Educational Foundation.” The foundation has been instrumental in assisting collegiate members with financial aid supplements, and the General Fraternity in the development of the LEAD Program.

Sigma Nu created the LEAD Program as a tool to assist our members in both gaining the knowledge and developing the skills and abilities needed to be an effective and ethical leader for life. All members go through four stages for each year of your college career.

Every colony and chapter has a candidate education program. This program educates the selected candidates about the fraternity and how to be involved in Sigma Nu. This is the first phase of the LEAD program.

In the short time we have been back on campus, we have volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in town, along with making dinner at the Bartlett House Homeless Shelter downtown on many occasions. We participated in Alpha Phi’s “Bounce for Beats” basketball philanthropy and the “Battle of the Sexes” competition in which all fraternities and sororities were involved. We competed in the 2011 Spring Greek Games paired with the Alpha Phi sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity coming in 2nd overall, and we already are working on many events for the fall semester.

Philanthropy

Sigma Nu will be involved with many philanthropies at WVU. To raise money for each charity and philanthropy, an event is planned and carried out by us and sorority participants. The national philanthropy of Sigma Nu is Habitat for Humanity, and we will be working with them early in the fall semester. Sigma Nu also works with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Helping Hand Initiative. We will continue to volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club and the Bartlett House whenever we can.

Our fall and spring philanthropies are currently being planned.
