Summary/History

Sigma Chi is one of the earliest fraternities founded on the West Virginia University campus.  For over 110 years, the Mu Mu Chapter has maintained the purpose for its design: to promote the concepts of Friendship, Justice, and Learning.  Our mission is the development of value-based leaders committed to the betterment of character, campus, and community.

Sigma Chi’s vision statement is “to become the preeminent college leadership development program organization-aligned, focused, and living our core values."  Our chapter experiences a positive annual growth of and maintains a belief we will progress through the future.

Our brothers are involved in all areas of academics including Accounting, Biology, Business, Communications, Criminology and Investigations, Finance, Political Science, and many others.  We are also involved in other fields as well devoting time to Student Government Association, the Board of Governors, WVU Ice Hockey, WVU Rugby, WVU Lacrosse, WVU Boxing, as well as other academic clubs and honoraries.

Our public motto is “In Hoc Signo Vinces” meaning from its Latin Translation, “In this sign, you will conquer”.

Sigma Chi is one of the prominent national fraternities with a long list of notable alumni. Sig alums include David Letterman, Drew Breese, John Wayne, Brad Pitt, Bill Marriott, Mike Ditka, J. William Fulbright, Woody Harrelson and Bob Griese.

Sigma Chi is an important fraternity on campus with an exceptional group of young men recognized as leaders throughout West Virginia University. We are looking for more young men who meet our standards and are the leaders of tomorrow. We hope to see you this fall.

Programs

Sigma Chi has notable events throughout the year. The Brothers of Sigma Chi participate in and organize many events each school year which are either academic, philanthropic or social in nature.  We are perennial competitors in all of the sororities’ philanthropic events, most notably with top place finishes in Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Golf Classic, Delta Gamma’s Anchor Bowl, Alpha Xi Delta’s Ultimate Frisbee, and Sigma Kappa’s pool tournament.  We make monthly visits to the local Boys and Girls Club as well as the Sundale Nursing Home.  We have our annual Fall Formal at Snowshoe Mountain Resort where both brothers and pledges experience an unforgettable weekend.  In the spring, we have a Parent’s Day luncheon, a slide show/awards banquet, and a date party that evening.

Philanthropy

Sigma Chi nationally has named the Children’s Miracle Network as our national charity to which each undergraduate chapter’s philanthropy event, Derby Days, contributes. The Brothers of Sigma Chi have won WVU’s Best Philanthropy Award three times since 2001, most recently in 2005.  Last year, our weeklong Derby Days event was able to donate $1000 to the Children’s Miracle Network.  Our Derby Days is enjoyed and revered by all our brothers as well as loved by all of the sororities who participate.

Obligations

The pledge ship in Sigma Chi costs $400 broken into three payments over the course of the semester.  This money pays for fraternity supplies, registration fees, insurance, initiation fees, and some social dues.

As a brother in Sigma Chi, your dues each semester depend on whether or not you reside in the chapter house.  We have three style of rooms to choose from; singles, doubles A, and doubles B, each with their own cost (Singles at about $3,000, Doubles A at about $2,900, and Doubles B at about $2,700).  If you choose to live in the house, the monies are all inclusive for all utilities (cable, internet, water, garbage, and electric), parking, a house cook, a meal plan, and your national, social, and insurance dues.   Payment plans and incentives are available.  As a brother who does not live in the house, your semester dues are around $450.
