Summary/History

Sigma Alpha Mu can play an important part in making your college experience positive, fulfilling, and rewarding. ΣΑΜ nurtures individuality while providing greater opportunities for friendship, education, service, and leadership.

Sigma Alpha Mu is continuity. It’s valuable traditions carried forward. It’s a home away from home and a center for your college activities. It creates friendships and nurtures ideals that will last your whole life. Sigma Alpha Mu is an international fraternity with chapters spread across North America. Its members share certain common ideals.

The Sigma Alpha Mu experience expands knowledge, offers the experience of service, and brings out one’s best. With knowledge comes understanding. And with service to self and one’s fellows, there is developed a unique sense of usefulness that enriches all of life.

Fraternity Life
The College Fraternity experience offers endless opportunities for your undergraduate years and beyond. Many successful leaders in business, politics, education, and entertainment developed their skills in the Greek Community.

Fraternity members come together from all walks of life with a common goal: To achieve excellence in every aspect of life. In 1909, eight sophomores at the College of the City of New York pledged themselves in a bond of fellowship. Thus Sigma Alpha Mu was born. The passing years have witnessed much as over 53,000 men have earned the right to wear the distinctive octagonal badge. Sigma Alpha Mu grows ever stronger and looks ahead.

The camaraderie gained will last a lifetime. ΣΑΜ seeks to attract those of vision and character. Such young men will grow as individuals, mature, and learn from their fraternity experience that which universities are unequipped to teach, namely to get along with others in a complex society . In the process, these men will mold the future of the Fraternity and carry its ideals and objectives on to the next generation.

Programs

Academics
We are proud of Sigma Alpha Mu’s scholarship record. Sammy has ranked near the top of all national fraternities in academic achievement. Currently over $90,000 in scholarships are given away annually to our student members who demonstrate need and merit. When one experiences scholastic difficulty, ΣΑΜ and its members try to help. Only in a fraternity can one find fellow students and an entire organization so interested in the welfare of the individual.

Serving the Community
Community service and philanthropic fund raising are integral parts of the Sigma Alpha Mu experience. Our National philanthropic programs have raised funds to combat Pediatric AIDS and heart disease. Each chapter constructs and performs its own philanthropic events to benefit worthwhile causes. In addition, members participate in activities such as University and community cleanups, feeding the homeless, and tutoring elementary school students.

Leadership
The opportunity for leadership development is one of the greatest assets of membership in Sigma Alpha Mu .Hands-on experience as a chapter officer, committee chairman or active member allows you to develop skills which will benefit you throughout your college career, as well as in your professional endeavors.

In ΣΑΜ you will learn by doing. You will learn to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public and motivate others. These skills will help you in college and throughout your life. Remember, it takes more than just a degree to get an education!

Friendship
Sigma Alpha Mu is built on friendship, a spirit of brotherhood and fellowship. Sharing each other’s experiences and growing together. Once you graduate your memories of specific classes and exams may fade, but the friendships you make in Sammy will remain vivid for a lifetime.

Philanthropy

Mission:
To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

History:
The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association was incorporated on April 10, 1980, with a budget of $75,000 and businessman Jerome Stone as founding president. The seven founding chapters were Boston, Columbus, Minneapolis, New York City, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Seattle.

In 1980, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested only $13 million in Alzheimer research. Then, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan designated the first National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week. The Association founded more chapters and started its own research program. Things were beginning to happen.

The Alzheimer’s Association, today a multimillion-dollar organization, has been the catalyst and leader for a generation of advancements in Alzheimer research and care. Our organization’s achievements and progress in the field have given thousands of people a better quality of life and brought hope for millions more.

Obligations

Every member (actives and associates) has a financial responsibility to pay dues to both the local chapter and our national organization for insurance and initiation fees.

When you first accept your bid to pledge Sigma Alpha Mu, you have two weeks to pay $125.  This cost will cover your annual national dues and all expenses while pledging, including all chapter functions.

Every initiated member of Sigma Alpha Mu has a one time Initiation Fee of $300.  This fee is collected following the first four weeks of your associate member period.  This one-time cost includes your brother pin, national periodicals, a lifetime membership, and more.

Our financial budget is set during April prior to the next school year (i.e. April 2007 for Fall 2007-Spring 2008).  Every member has a vote in the process to delegate financial resources to different areas of the chapter expenses.  Our goal is to charge a Fall dues rate no more than $400 and Spring dues at $350 for active member dues.  These rates are all inclusive, and no money will be collected during the semester for fraternity functions.  Dues are collected within the first three weeks of the semester.
