Summary/History

On March 9th, 1856, 8 men founded the first chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Alabama.  Their organization was to be a federation of men devoted to friendship, service, and chivalry.  With over 280,000 initiated members, ΣAE is one of the largest social fraternities in America, including 210 chapters, 13 colonies, and 25 universities petitioning expansion.  The WV Gamma chapter was colonized at WVU on April 22nd 2006, and received their national charter on April 21st 2007.  The ΣAE chapter of WVU believes in fostering personal and academic excellence and growth as well as community involvement in an absolutely HAZING-FREE environment, and that all members be True Gentleman.  The True Gentlemen have promoted a higher scale for men at WVU to live by.  ΣAE attained an entire fraternity GPA average in 2006 of 3.4 and become involved in the community with service projects. Some of these include time at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, the Morning Glory Ministry cleanup, home winterization of local Morgantown homes, and other various community projects.

The True Gentlemen are committed to excellence and hope to promote excellence through academics, leadership, and personal growth to lead young men into successful lives.  Notable alumni include legendary WVU Football Coach Don Nehlen, President William McKinley, Elliot Ness, William Faulkner, comedian/actor David Spade, USC Football Coach Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Tony Boselli, Nick Lachey, Fred Savage, Joe Walt, and General Richard Meyers to name a few.

Visit us on the world-wide-web at www.saewvu.com or stop by the fraternity house located at 660 North High Street, directly above Boreman North.

Programs

As a member of ΣAE, you will find brotherhood and a place to achieve personal excellence through the many resources and opportunities that will be available to you.  As leaders in the Greek Community, ΣAE was the first fraternity to organize a National Headquarters (1930), National Leadership School (1935), and Career Development Program called “The Leading Edge”.  In 2007, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation awarded $69,000 to 46 students for scholarships.  Our Chapter also offers incentives such as reduced due for high scholastics and scholarship opportunities.  Family involvement is also promoted through the ΣAE Lion’s Club (male family) and Minerva’s Club (female family).  The Leadership School is held every summer and usually involves a cruise with other alumni and members whom participate together in enriching and developmental seminars as well as having a great time enjoying the open seas and summer.

Philanthropy

Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s nationally recognized philanthropy is the Children’s Miracle Network.  Our Chapter celebrates Paddy Murphy Week to raise money for this charity.  In 2006-2007, we were able to donate $1000 to the Children’s Miracle Network.

During Paddy Murphy Week, there is a Chili-Cookoff, the Paddy Murphy Shootout (Lasertag Tournament), coin collections, t-shirt sales, a “Where’s Paddy?” competition, and hopefully new events to be added in the Spring 2008.

ΣAE gives back to the community in many ways and even helps others in need.  With a combination of ? hours of community service and our Adopt-a-Child program, we continue to help those in need.  ΣAE also participated in WVU’s Toy Mountain and SHOP programs.
