Summary/History

The fraternity movement began in 1776 when Thomas Jefferson formed a literary and political society with his closest friends at The College of William and Mary, and has been closely intertwined with the American experience ever since.

Fraternities have been born between men seeking brotherhood, fellowship, common understanding, and lifelong commitment, in nearly every imaginable environment – from the battlefields of the Civil War to the dining hall of a New York college to the second floor of a downtown storefront in Charleston. More than 250 years of leaders, scholars, athletes, citizens, and stewards have been shaped and built by the fraternity experience, and Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity is proud to be a leading member of that legacy.

Founded in Charleston, South Carolina at the turn of the 20th Century, we have grown from humble beginnings based in friendship and trust to a nationwide brotherhood of more than 80,000 men, living and leading in every state and community in our Union.

Our chapter of Pi Kappa Phi organized at WVU in 1938 as the Alpha Rho Chapter.  The chapter went “inactive” at the start of WWII after losing many men who chose to volunteer for service and then was rechartered in 1978.  Pi Kappa Phi was founded in Charleston, SC in 1904 and quickly became a “National Fraternity”, colonizing on campuses as far away as California by the 1920’s.  Pi Kappa Phi remains one of the largest, yet fastest growing, fraternities in the United States.  The Alpha Rho Chapter here on the campus of WVU is rich in tradition and ever expanding.

Pi Kappa Phi is a permanent "fixture" on WVU's campus following our chartering date in 1930. To continue to provide for our future members, our house recently underwent $800,000 in renovations and was completed for the 08-09 school year. The new renovations include clean living quarters, meeting rooms and public spaces, central AC, off-street parking, and a catering and cleaning service.

Programs

Pi Kappa Phi’s commitment to leadership dates back more than 100 years to our humble roots at the College of Charleston, South Carolina where our founders exemplified leadership in the classroom, on the athletic field, in campus politics and within the community. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was founded to further create leadership opportunities—by men who made the choice to lead. Today, on more than 139 campuses across America, Pi Kappa Phi has broadened its commitment to building men who are Leaders By Choice.

As a member of Pi Kappa Phi, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop as a person in ways that cannot be taught in textbooks.  The first priority of members in Pi Kappa Phi is performing academically.  Each associate and active member must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA during college in order to remain eligible for continued participation.  Our fraternity also stresses the importance of meeting new people, participating in multiple organizations and activities across the campus and throughout the community and building our members through leadership institutes.

Dr. David Stewart, the WVU Dean of Students, serves as Pi Kappa Phi's Academic Advisor. He is professionally trained by experts from Pi Kappa Phi in assisting members in their pursuit of academic excellence. Dr. Stewart is a great resource for Pi Kappa Phi due to his expertise in student affairs and his dedication to our academic standards.

CONFERENCES

Conferences give members the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, learn important practices to take back to their chapter, but also give brothers the chance to gather and celebrate the successes of the fraternity.

Pi Kapp College: Pi Kapp College is held every odd summer on a college campus. Members return to "college," follow a "major" and spend the week earning their "degree".

Supreme Chapter: The fraternity’s legislative sessions held every even summer. Fraternity business for the upcoming year is discussed, National Officers are elected, and brothers are given the chance to shape the future of Pi Kappa Phi.

Mid-Year Leadership Conferences: Each January, the fraternity offers four conferences in four cities across the country to bring the best in officer training to members. Officers spend an intense weekend immersed in programming that will teach them the skills to effectively run their chapters.

LIFE 401: CREATING A LIFE STRATEGY

Life 401 is a course in creating a life strategy. During Life 401 you are challenged to look at your life in a whole new light as you discover ways to make changes in your life that will lead to success.

Life 401 was created by brother John Spence, Alpha Epsilon (Florida). John has developed Life 401 especially for Pi Kappa Phi to help his brothers achieve success in all they do. John has known the struggles of college. He shares his amazing story of failing out of college, turning his life around to graduate at the top of his class, becoming one of the youngest CEOs in America at age 27 and now traveling the world sharing his secrets of success as a consultant to major corporations. John's realistic style inspires you to believe that ANYTHING is possible but that only YOU can make things happen!

Life 401 was developed exclusively for Pi Kappa Phi as a way to aid our members in planning for the future of their dreams. In one day, John teaches the same advanced tools and techniques in Life 401 that he teaches to high-level executives at major corporations worldwide on how to achieve success and happiness in business and personal life. Spend a day with John Spence and he can teach you how to get what you want out of school and life.

Philanthropy

Pi Kappa Phi is the only Greek organization to organize and maintain its own national philanthropy.

Push America, founded by members of Pi Kappa Phi in 1977, is the exclusive service learning project of the Fraternity, with the purpose of instilling lifelong service in our members and serving people with disabilities.

What started out as construction of a therapeutic play unit has evolved into nationally recognized cycling events and construction projects that work collectively to promote a greater understanding of people with disabilities.

There is no other organization in the Greek world as committed to a single charity as Pi Kappa Phi.

Members of Pi Kappa Phi have raised nearly
$8 million dollars in support of the projects and programs of Push America as well as donated thousands of man hours to renovate facilities that serve people with disabilities across the country. New projects are always on the horizon.

The mission of Push America: Building leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today.

Pi Kappa Phi Members Assist....
  • By providing disability education and a high-quality service experience.
  • By providing personal and professional leadership development activities.
  • By instilling a passion for service in each member.
Pi Kappa Phi Members Assist People with Disabilities...
  • By spreading a nationwide message of understanding of abilities to campuses and communities.
  • By volunteering, making friends with people with disabilities, and treating them as people first.
  • By building accessible environments where people with disabilities can enjoy camping experiences and everyday activities the same as able-bodied people.
CONSTRUCTION

AccessABILITY
AccessABILITY is a Push America construction program in which members of Pi Kappa Phi support their local communities through the construction of wheelchair ramps for families and individuals that would not otherwise be able to afford it. Pi Kappa Phis are giving their time and man-power and Push America is providing funding for the materials that make this program possible. If you are an individual or family in need of a wheelchair ramp or know of someone who is in need of one to help provide better access to your home, we will gladly get a local chapter organized to assist with the construction.

Give-A-Push Weekend

Give-A-Push Weekend is a Push America construction program created to provide manpower to build and renovate structures such as accessible fishing piers, boardwalks, pavilions and playgrounds for camps providing support to people with disabilities. Pi Kappa Phis from across the country come together for a weekend of construction and teamwork to provide a well-built accessible environment for people with disabilities to enjoy during their camping experience.

Since 1989, 95 Give-A-Push Weekends have been completed and almost 2.5 million hours have been donated to camps to make them more accessible. These hours translate into savings of over $900,000 from labor and grants given. Push America provides a $5,000 Give-A-Push Weekend grant to each camp to help cover cost of materials, meals and lodging.

Push Camp
Push Camp is a Push America construction program, developed in 1991, to provide manpower to build and renovatestructures such as accessible fishing piers, boardwalks, pavilions and playgrounds for camps providing support to people with disabilities. Pi Kappa Phis from across the country come together for a week of construction and teamwork to provide a well-built accessible environment for people with disabilities to enjoy during their camping experience.

Since 1991, 56 Push Camps have been completed and almost 2 million hours have been donated to camps to make them more accessible. These hours translate into savings of over $600,000 from labor and grants given.

Build America
Build America is a Push America construction program created to travel, during the summer, across the country to make camps more accessible for people with disabilities. With the same concept of other Push America construction programs, Build America constructs and renovates nature trails, fishing piers, high-ropes courses, accessible playgrounds and many other projects.

During the summer, a team of 25 Pi Kappa Phis will arrive at camp and start accessible construction. The team will build all day and take part in camp activities with people with disabilities once the workday has been completed. There is no better way to learn and have a better understanding of people with disabilities than to interact and just discuss everyday living.

CYCLING

Push America has been cycling all across the country on behalf of people with disabilities since 1988. Visiting over 30 different states, the men of Pi Kappa Phi reach out to communities, organizations, and people with disabilities through an exciting slate of events. The cycling events are carrying with them a message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities.

Journey of Hope
Journey of Hope is a 12,000-mile combined, Push America cycling event that takes 82 Pi Kappa Phis cycling on three different routes from San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA to Washington D.C. Journey of Hope is the premier event Push America organizes that brings together over 100 communities and raises more than $500,000 on behalf of people with disabilities.

Gear Up Florida

Gear Up Florida is an 800-mile, Push America cycling event that takes 35 Pi Kappa Phis cycling from Miami to Tallahassee in just two weeks. Gear Up Florida draws a lot of attention out on the road and carries with them a message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities to communities across Florida. Gear Up Florida raises over $70,000 annually.

PUSH AMERICA PROGRAMS

The programs of Push America empower and motivate members of Pi Kappa Phi to get involved in improving the lives of people with disabilities as well as their own. These programs provide an excellent service experience where Pi Kappa Phis can see firsthand the impact they are making in the lives of people with disabilities.

Push America Academy
– Members of Pi Kappa Phi attend leadership conferences where they are educated on disability topics and on how they can play an active role in improving the lives of people with disabilities in their communities.

Disability Awareness
– Members of Pi Kappa Phi engage in a variety of events tailored to their campus to increase disability awareness. Ranging from wheelchair basketball to “Empathy Training Dinners” these opportunities not only provide educational opportunities simulating what it “might be like” to live with a disability, but create an open forum for issues faced by students with disabilities.

Volunteerism
– Pi Kappa Phi chapters across the country are becoming more involved in their communitiesthrough volunteer relationships with local organizations supporting people with disabilities. Their understanding of people with disabilities is greatly increased through their volunteer relationships. There is also an opportunity for chapters to provide grant funding, through Push America, to the organization. This is another way for Pi Kappa Phis to see how their fund raising is directly impacting the lives of people with disabilities.

Fund raising
– Pi Kappa Phis across the nation have collectively raised over $8 million in support of the various programs Push America offers. Chapters sponsor sporting events, raffles, disability speaking presentations, amongst many other eye-catching events on campus to further their fund-raising efforts.
