Summary/History

The Phi Kappa Psi National tradition has remained strong throughout its 155 years of existence.  Perhaps one of its most dominant chapters is West Virginia Alpha, Here in Morgantown.  Alpha chapter recently celebrated 116th year on campus, thus marking the chapter as the first fraternity at West Virginia University.

Phi Kappa Psi is a unique fraternity with each brother contributing his own unique attributes.  Along with Phi Kappa Psi Brotherhood come distinct advantages.  The remodeled house offers comfortable accommodations for up to 55 boarding brothers.  The house is equipped with a private chapel (one of three nationwide), where it has hosted many enjoyable services.  The intramural program offers something for everyone and is constantly busy with participation.  Not a year has gone by where Phi Kappa Psi isn’t running for the championship.

A refurbished library filled with the classics, and our computer room, make it easy for the student.  Serious academics are a must at Phi Kappa Psi.  With hard work comes play, ad Phi Kappa Psi has and encompassing social program.  Well respected among sororities and fraternities, we are very socially active with plenty of Mountaineer spirit.

Our chapter house is one full of tradition and history.  The WV Alpha House is an 80,000 plus square foot house made up of four stories.  It has a capacity of 55 brothers.  Along with offering actives a place to live, it offers an entertainment room with pool table and big screen TV, a computer lab and wireless access from anywhere in the house, a dining hall where thirteen meals are professionally prepared each week, and a fun positive safe atmosphere.

Adjacent to the main house is our private chapel.  It is the only one like it on the West Virginia University campus, and one of only three Phi Psi chapter homes across the country.  Many traditional fraternity ceremonies are held here, as well as the chapter’s active meetings.

Phi Kappa Psi is a diverse group of individuals bound together by true brotherhood.  Phi Psi is proud the WVU President David Hardesty, along with numerous famous alumni, are members of our fraternity.
Becoming a brother of West Virginia Alpha Phi Kappa Psi brings many opportunities and advantages beyond friendship.

Programs

Scholarships:
The West Virginia Alpha Educational Fund awards approximately $12,000 each year to those brothers, while living in the chapter house that achieve a minimum grade point average.  These scholarships are awarded each semester.

On a national level, the Endowment Fund of The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity provides over $250,000 to deserving graduate and undergraduate brothers annually.

Leadership:
There are many leadership positions and opportunities in Phi Kappa Psi WV Alpha, but beyond that, Phi Kappa Psi hosts the American Leadership Academy every spring at the Cobo San Lucas Alpha Chapter.  For a series of one week programs during spring break members from 62 chapters go to Cobo for leadership training.  Comprised of 20 distinguished speakers and several workshops, the program offers members a chance to acquire knowledge and skills as well as take advantage of incredible networking opportunities.

Along with the ALA, Phi Kappa Psi holds a bi-annual conference called the Woodrow Wilson Leadership School.  WWLS is held at varying universities throughout the country.  It is an opportunity for active brothers to learn about leadership, scholarships and services, and hear some of the best speakers on the Greek circuit.

Grand Arch Council:
Another bi-annual event hosted by Phi Kappa Psi is the Grand Arch Council.  The GAC is a conference held in different major U.S. cities where brothers are invited to attend to elect the next generation of national officers. It also offers brothers to take part in conferences, workshops, and luncheon with actives and alumni alike from all chapters across the county.

Events

Philanthropy

Every year brothers of Phi Kappa Psi participate in many diverse philanthropy events.  Some are specifically organized events, others are individual volunteer activities.  As a chapter whole, West Virginia Alpha hosts an annual Greek wide volleyball tournament to raise money for the WVU children’s hospital.
