Summary/History

Kappa Alpha Order is one of the oldest fraternities on campus. Our chapter was founded March 20, 1897, about 30 years after the Order was founded in Lexington, Virginia on December 21, 1865.

Kappa Alpha is unique among other fraternities in the fact that it is an Order. An order will take the good qualities of each individual and build upon these strengths. As a result, the entire chapter will grow and continue to progress in the same direction. Some of the Kappa Alpha members include pre-med, journalism, business majors, ice hockey players, and members of student government.

The spiritual founder of Kappa Alpha is Robert E. Lee. This does not mean we support the teachings of the Old South such as slavery or racism. What it does mean is that we believe in and teach others how to be a gentleman.

Our motto is "Dieu et les Dames," which is Latin for God and Womanhood.

In addition, Kappa Alpha stresses brotherhood.  We have a great group of guys and are looking forward to seeing all the new faces in the fall semester!

Programs

Throughout the past year Alpha Rho has been able to make a significant impact on not only West Virginia University, but also the heart of Morgantown.  After moving into the new house and establishing the new manor, rush week was quickly approaching. This was the first time Kappa Alpha opened the doors of the new manor to the public.

One of our more recent events this semester was our Christmas party. To make our Christmas party unique we decided to join Alpha Phi and provide gifts for the underprivileged children of Morgantown. Each brother paired up with a sister of Alpha Phi and spent roughly $40 on a specific child of the Boys and Girls Club of Morgantown. Some of the events we had planned for them included decorating cookies, eating a spaghetti dinner, and receiving presents from their hero, Santa Clause. By the end of the day everyone was worn out, yet completely satisfied knowing that the children would never forget the day they visited the KA manor.

Overall, Alpha Rho has accomplished much over this past year. We provided an amazing service to Morgantown and had a great time participating in it. Our new philanthropy seemed to be a great success as well as the talk of the town.

Philanthropy

Our last philanthropy took place in the Mountainlair ballroom. Guests and participants dressed in their most creative toga. The pageant was known as “The Greek Goddesses.” During this event we were able to include every sorority as well as every fraternity on campus. Each sorority competed in three different contests. The first was intelligence, then beauty, and finally dance. Also, each fraternity sent one representative to join us on the panel of judges. Through this new philanthropy we were able to raise $400 toward the muscular dystrophy association.

Our next Philanthropy for the spring is already in the works!
