Summary/History

The Beta Psi chapter of Beta Theta Pi was founded on the campus of West Virginia University in 1900. Standing proudly atop the mountainous campus, the Beta Theta Pi chapter house, built in 1929, is listed in the National Registry of Historical Landmarks. The beautiful home and grounds exemplify the tradition and commitment of the brotherhood of Beta Theta Pi.

As a strong national fraternity with over 185,000 members, Beta Theta Pi offers a national network of brotherhood. As a medium-sized chapter on campus, Beta offers its members both individuality and a strong bond unsurpassed anywhere.

Around campus, "Betas" are known for their outstanding social events and casual attitude. But academics are a primary concern of Beta Theta Pi. In fact, Beta Theta Pi has academic standards beyond those required by the respective colleges. Each proud brother of Beta Theta Pi possesses a desire to attain the Beta spirit through a lifetime of achievements.

Programs

Men of Principle Initiative

The Men of Principle initiative is a commitment to the vision of the Beta founders. A chapter that chooses to partner is making a public statement to pursue the Mission, Vision and Goals of The Initiative. Further, these chapters have committed to positive pledge education, alcohol-free recruitment and the promotion of the principles and obligations contained in the Ritual of Beta Theta Pi. It is a commitment to being who we say we are. The Men of Principle initiative is an equal partnership between the undergraduate chapter, advisory team and the Fraternity's staff/volunteer leadership. This partnership is grounded in self-governance and the principles of Beta Theta Pi to ensure long-term chapter success. The Men of Principle initiative is not mandatory for chapters.

The Beta Wilderness Challenge

The Donald W. English Beta Wilderness Challenge (BWC) is an outdoor leadership experience that takes Beta undergraduates through a bold agenda focusing on the principles and obligations of the Fraternity. BWC is a five day journey in a remote area of North America that is jointly lead by a member of the Administrative Office staff and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Participants learn various hard and soft skills such as backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, camp craft and mountain navigation. Participants also learn about living the Beta Ritual (Three Great Principles), leadership, facilitation, communication, trust, and giving and receiving feedback. The experience is physically demanding and participants must be in good physical condition.

The Wooden Institute

The Wooden Institute is an incredible opportunity for initiated Betas that focuses on the ritual of Beta Theta Pi and becoming a better leader. The Wooden Institute allows Betas to interact with brothers and Friends of Beta from across North America. Participants share ideas, dissect Fraternity ritual, partake in challenging activities that focus on leadership skills, learn more about the history of Beta Theta Pi and reflect on the Fraternity's heritage.

Keystone Regional Leadership Conference

Keystone Regional Leadership Conference is a high quality, regional education experience focusing on chapter officer development, principled leadership and volunteer training. In 2004, chapter presidents and volunteers overwhelmingly identified the need for this type of program. This is the most recent General Fraternity leadership opportunity to focus on operational concepts for chapter officers and advisors. Keystone, still in its pilot phase, also incorporates Advisory Team Conferences and will be gradually expanded regionally throughout North America.

During Keystone, chapter officers and advisors attend individual officer tracks, learn how to lead their chapters and set goals with their executive team. The Saturday evening banquet for area alumni and guests features chapter awards, fraternal 50 and 25 recognition and a prominent Keynote speaker.

Philanthropy

Beta Theta Pi's annual philanthropy is the Beta Bowl, which is comming off its successful inaugural year. The Beta bowl was developed by the brothers of Beta Theta Pi to incorporate all sororities in a series of last-team-standing flag football games for the purpose of charity. The spring-based event takes place on Saturday morning and extends well into the afternoon. The campus's sororities are randomly paired against each other, and winners advance until only one team remains. The philanthropy benefits the local United Way and other charitable organizations. Beta Theta Pi is hoping that we continue the success that the Beta Bowl has brought for many years to come.
